Digging around the shed

We arrived at the farm just after 11am - a bit later than usual because we went to a 40th birthday party the night before and needed at least some sleep. This was Kath's first trip through the new front gate and she inspected the new gate first hand.

Today's tasks revolved around the shed, specifically making sure the walls are square so installing the floor is as pain-free as possible. The weather forecast was for rain late in the day, but that's alright as most of the work we had to do could be done from inside the shed.

Just after arriving, Kath spotted some kangaroos feeding at the bottom of the hill. It was strange to see them out so late in the day.


As mentioned before, the walls of the shed are bent out of shape, so Kath got to work digging away the ground from underneath so I could install new support channels. Here she is working on the side wall.

While Kath was working outside, I finished off the floor joists in preparation for the flooring. We had to keep all the contents of the shed under cover as it looked like it was going to rain at anytime. It made working inside the shed very cramped.

Eventually, the heavens opened up. Once again, the shed roof held up and not a single drop got through. Even the newly installed gutters did a fantastic job. Here's the water flow from just one gutter during a heavy shower. We collected about 5 litres of water from 10 minutes of rain fall. Hopefully, we should be able to fill a 1000 litre tank after a few days of rain! As it turned out, it only rained for a little while, eventually the sun came out and we needed to apply sun screen.

The trees we planted a couple of months ago are doing very well and are full of leaves. With so much grass around, the local wildlife has left the tress alone (so far!).

Well, time flies and we had to head back to Sydney. We couldn't finish all the walls of the shed and we'll have to come back another time to finish it off. One last task was to attach the sign to our front gate.

While driving to the main road, we stopped to open a gate. A parrot sitting on a nearby gate watched us with curiosity. We expected it to fly away as soon as we stopped, but even after Kath got out of the car to unlock the gate, it just stared at us with a crest of feathers on its head and a cranky look in his eye. Kath looked a bit nervous as the parrot eyed her off. Maybe we'll make friends with it next time!
